Connie Kalitta Raced at Detroit Dragway
Legendary drag racer Conrad “Connie” Kalitta made many an appearance at Detroit Dragway. Kalitta, who has been racing since the late 1950s, will be took part in the nostalgia drag races at the track. This an opportunity to see one of the most accomplished racers in history compete on a Michigan track. Connie Kalitta Early Years
Connie Kalitta was born on February 24, 1938 in Mount Clemens, Michigan. He attended school in Mt. Clemens and then went to work for his father’s trucking business after graduation. It was during this time that he began drag racing.
Kalitta’s first taste of drag racing came behind the wheel of a 1955 Chevy that he raced at Detroit Dragway. He quickly began making a name for himself on the drag racing circuit. In 1964, he won his first major event, the U.S. Nationals, becoming the first person to ever win that event in their very first attempt. Connie Kalitta is a legend in the world of drag racing. His early years were spent honing his skills on the track, and he quickly became one of the most successful drivers in the sport.
SUCESS
Kalitta’s success on the drag racing circuit continued throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He won the NHRA Winternationals in 1968 and 1969, and he was crowned the first-ever NHRA Top Fuel champion in 1970. He would go on to win the title again in 1972.

Crash At The 1971 Nationals AT Indy
At the 1971 U.S. Nationals held in Indianapolis, Indiana “Indy” Connie was driving a Poncho Rendon top fuel dragster. It appeared the dragster flipped on it’s side sliding and turning down the track. Fortunately Connie was only bruised and battered, but the dragster was destroyed.

Still Involved In Drag Racing Today
Today, Kalitta Motorsports is one of the most successful teams in NHRA competition today, with Connie running a top fuel dragster and a nitro funny car. Connie Kalitta is still considered one of the best drivers ever in the business of drag racing.
