Dale raced War Eagle at Detroit Dragway on July 15 , 1967. Dale had War Eagle painted in the same color scheme as John Force’s current Funny Car. Dale qualified War Eagle in the number two position with a time of
11.42 seconds. In the first round of eliminations, Dale defeated Ronnie Sox with a time of 11.38 seconds. Dale then went on to defeat Dick Harrell in the second round with a time of 11.37 seconds. Dale’s War Eagle then lost to eventual event winner, Tom McEwen in the semifinals. Dale’s War Eagle ran a best time of 11.33 seconds during eliminations. Although Dale did not win the event, he had a great showing in his Funny Car debut.

Dale’s career spanned more than three decades. He began drag racing in the early 1960s and became a member of the National Hot Rod Association in 1966. Dale raced in the NHRA’s Top Fuel class from 1967 to 1971. He won the 1969 NHRA World Championship. Dale also raced in Funny Car from 1972 to 1976. He won the NHRA Funny Car World Championship in 1974. Dale retired from racing in 1977. After his retirement, Dale became a drag racing television commentator. He also opened a successful performance parts business. Dale Pulde was inducted into the National Hot Rod Association’s Hall of Fame in 2007.
The 1977 Pontiac Firebird War Eagle
One Of the Funny Cars that Pulde campaigned, and the most known was the 1977 Pontiac Firebird that he called the War Eagle. The car was originally built by Roy Fjastad and it carried Pulde to the 1977 NHRA Funny Car championship. The War Eagle name came from Auburn University, Pulde’s alma mater. Pulde continued to race the War Eagle until 1979, when he sold the car to John Force. Force went on to have great success with the car, winning the 1980 NHRA Funny Car championship. Dale Pulde is a true pioneer of the sport of drag racing. Pulde’s War Eagle was not only an iconic Funny Car, but it was also very successful. Dale Pulde is one of the most successful drag racers in history.
