We are now into our second decade keeping the memory of one of the best drag strips in the history of drag racing alive, Detroit Dragway.
Now while our main mission is keeping DD alive, we will start posting photos & events from other Michigan drag strips. We do not want to loose any more tracks.
Anyone from the Detroit area has to remember the radio spots, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday at Detroit Dragway. Ben Christ is reported to have been the person that came up with this ad.
Gil Kohen’sDetroit Dragway open in 1959 and it closed at the end of the season in 1997, almost 40 years of history gone. Detroit Dragway sat close to most of the American car companies, making it a hot bed for the car companies to prove their products. Detroit Dragway hosted the U.S. Nationals in 1959 and also in 1960. The local car manufactures took notice of this sport, and how it could sell their products. Auto manufactures’ took noticed, and began to put many of their vehicles in the drag race.
Detroit Dragway was a major force in drag racing for a number of years. But time and politics caught up with it and it closed in 1998. The dragway was removed and a warehouse complex sits in it’s place. Today when I drive pass the historical corner, I can’t help but hear the words, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday at Detroit Dragway. Gone, but not forgotten.
My first trip to Detroit Dragway was in 1961 when my cousin took me. I was hooked after that. I was lucky enough to only live about 10 minutes away from DD. Does anyone remember the old Detroit Dragway commercials?? Sunday, Sunday at Detroit Dragway, see the Jet Green Monster. Brings back some good memories huh.
We have probably the largest collection of photos taken at Detroit Dragway on the internet, and are always adding more. Thanks to all our friends on our Facebook page & group for sharing your photos.
We also have other memorabilia like posters & newspaper articles.
A very special thank you to my friend, Perry Shannon Wyatt Jr. without his help we would never have all these many photos. Perry also manages our FB group.
I Can’t forget to thank KARMA. It was best served cold.
